Barcelona Airport Shut Today

Barcelona and 10 other Catalonia Airports have been closed today until 4pm.

The 11 Spanish Airports Closed today are Barcelona, Girona-Costa Brava, Reus, Sabadell, Asturias, Santander, Bilbao, San Sebastián, Vitoria, Pamplona y Logroño-Agoncillo.

The penetration of the cloud of volcanic ash in Spanish airspace requires close to air traffic, for safety reasons, the airports of Barcelona, Girona-Costa Brava, Reus, Sabadell, Asturias, Santander, Bilbao, San Sebastian, Vitoria, Pamplona and Logroño, from 08.30 hours to 16.00 hours on Sunday 18 April. He has also closed the airport in Lleida, which does not belong to the Aena network.

Aena recommends that all persons planning to travel in the coming hours to report the status of their flights with airlines before going to airports.

Also, according to Eurocontrol, the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation, the cloud of volcanic ash is causing in the day today (April 18) total or partial restrictions in the airspace of the following countries: Austria, Germany , Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Holland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Romania, Serbia, Sweden, Switzerland and Ukraine.

King of Spain to open new terminal at Málaga Airport

King Juan Carlos has been invited to open the new Terminal 3 at Málaga Airport on the official opening date of Monday, 15th March.

500 guests will be invited to the opening, with top politicians, diplomats and others from the world of aviation.

The new terminal will be able to handle 7,500 suitcases and 9,000 passengers an hour (double the current capacity). These passenger numbers will not be reached until the second runway is in operation next year.

Terminal 3 at Malaga will have 86 check in desks and 20 boarding gates providing direct finger links for 12 planes.

AerLingus cuts flights to Spain from Gatwick

AerLingus has confirmed that it will cut back its presence at Gatwick Airport after less than a year in establishing a base there in an effort to reduce its spiralling costs and heavy losses in 2009.

The airline will cut the five aircraft based at Gatwick down to three, cancelling 10 routes to locations including Tenerife, Warsaw, Bucharest and Faro with effect from 31st March.

Three existing routes to Dublin, Knock and Malaga Airport will be retained, while a route to Cork will be added.

A45 motorway completed between Malaga Airport and Cordoba

If you are flying into Spain and hiring a car from Malaga Airport to drive to Cordoba, then the good news is that the A45 motorway has been completed and the final section between Encinas Reales and Benamejí can now take traffic for the first time. This means that the journey time from Malaga and Cordoba has been cut to 90 minutes.

A total of €400 million has been invested on the road over the past 17 years of to build this new link.

New trains on Malaga Airport-Fuengirola route


If you are flying in to Malaga Airport and catching the train to Fuengirola, then the current UT446 trains which have been in service since 1989 and reach a maximum speed of 100kph, are now going to be replaced with the new, more comfortable Civia models.


These trains are larger with access and facilities for the disabled as well as providing easy access for the elderly people or anyone carrying children. There is a passageway which connects the cabins, the ergonomic seats are modular, the wagons are air conditioned with PA systems and colour screens showing the route and stops.

Ryanair to open new base at Malaga Airport

The low cost airline Ryanair is to open its 38th base at Malaga Airport in June 2010. They will base four aircraft at the Spanish Airport which will fly to 19 new routes (making 39 in total).

They will offer 360 weekly flights from Malaga Airport to Aarhus, Berlin (Schonefeld), Bratislava, Eindhoven, Gothenburg, Krakow, Maastricht, Memmingen (Munich West), Oslo (Torp), Paris (Beauvais), Pisa, Santander, Santiago, Stockholm (Skavsta), Tampere, Valladolid, Venice (Treviso), Wroclaw and Zaragoza.

It is anticipated that the new routes will increase Ryanair’s annual number of passengers flying to and from Malaga to over 2 million.

Passenger Trials at Malaga Airport to Start in January

The Spanish Airport Authority Aena is in the process of recruiting the 1,800 volunteer passengers needed for the trials at Malaga Airport to test the operational efficiency of the new terminal which is due to open next Easter.

The exercises will take place in January with 200 people taking part to simulate airport procedures including check in where the “passengers” will be provided with luggage and a sample ticket. Tests will also take place on boarding procedures, baggage collection and the terminal’s security controls.

Attack at Malaga Airport

On Monday 5th October a member of the public overpowered a 58 year old Moroccan man who was threatening a female member of staff at Malaga Airport with a large knife. The hero of the hour disarmed and restrained the attacker until two police officers arrived and took into custody.

According to witnesses the man entered a travel agency demanding that the staff do something about a flight to Montreal he missed two weeks ago. When the female attendant informed him that it would cost him €200 euros for this to be done he took out a knife and held it to her throat.
